Getting started

1. Install from the Shopify App Store

Search for WhatMovedIt and choose Install. Shopify shows exactly what the app can read. There is no permission to edit your theme.

2. Your record starts straight away

We take a copy of every theme on your store, then record each change from then on. We also bring in the store events Shopify keeps for the last 90 days, like themes published and apps installed.

3. Open the Overview

The Overview shows the last few days of sales with every change marked. When a day looks unusual, open it to see what changed around then, with the exact lines before and after.

Common questions

How quickly do changes show up?

Usually within a few minutes. Shopify tells us when a theme changes, and we also check your themes on a schedule and run a full check every night, so a missed notification doesn’t mean a missed change.

Can it tell who made a change?

We show where a change came from when Shopify tells us: the theme editor, an app, or a theme being published. Shopify doesn’t say which staff member edited a theme in the editor.

What do “usual” sales mean?

Usual is the average of the 7 days before. It’s there to help you spot an odd day. A change on the same day is a fact worth checking, not proof that it moved your sales.

How do Black Friday freezes work? (Pro)

Choose a start and end date. If your live theme changes inside that window, we email you with a link to the before and after.

How does banner tracking work? (Pro)

Turn on the WhatMovedIt app embed in your theme editor. It counts views and clicks for each version of your banners, through Shopify’s customer events and with your shoppers’ consent. It doesn’t edit your theme code.

Can I restore an old version of a file?

WhatMovedIt never writes to your store, so it can’t restore for you. Open the version you want, copy it, and paste it into the code editor in Shopify. Every version is kept while the app is installed, so last year’s Black Friday theme is still there to copy from.

What happens when I uninstall?

Recording stops straight away. Shopify asks us to delete your store’s data 48 hours later, and we do. If you reinstall after that, your record starts fresh.
